Course Description

This is an introduction course, the first in the series in the study of Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IBP). This teaching module is designed to provide students with both an intellectual and personal/professional experience of somatic body-mind psychotherapy.

The format consists of interactional lecture material, group exercises, mini individual sessions, dyad exercises, demonstration sessions and group process.

Basic concepts are presented. Major areas of study are introduced that are later built upon in depth throughout IBP's Mental Health/Allied Professional/and Personal Development educational programs.

Students are encouraged to develop a differentiated, attuned awareness of their somatic presence, boundaries, and object relations.

  • Provide an experiential overview of IBP body-mind transpersonal psychotherapy;
  • Provide students access to a cognitive and experiential understanding of object relational themes held in the body;
  • Assist students to begin a body-mind understanding of presence and the impact of long-held inner beliefs, fears and patterns, and to reveal how these themes are projected onto one's current sense of self, others, and the world to form destructive repetitive patterns and outcomes;
  • Begin development of group coherence by building emotional safety, authenticity and trust to support personal growth and development.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn and experiment with basic mental health tools;
  • Experience the basic building blocks of IBP somatic psychotherapy;
  • Begin to identify their body-mind core foundational themes that pervasively inform their lives - the basic fault and somatic constancy;
  • Develop an understanding of the Primary Scenario (multi-generational family history), and how these themes are held in the body and are used to conduct our perceptions and behaviors;
  • Begin an introductory understanding and uncovering of two primary body-mind defensive patterns - character style and agency. These styles, once successfully used as protection, now interrupt authenticity and aliveness;
  • Develop an ability to observe the energetic body-mind process.
